Months before I ever submitted my CO application, I called the Center on Conscience & War's
toll-free line 1-800-379-2679. Ever since that first phone call,
the staff of this non-profit have provided me with legal advice,
explanations of what to expect, and sometimes, most meaningfully of
all, a listening ear.
There's certainly a number of steps to the process, and the early days and weeks of my blog detail what my personal experience entailed. For an overview, I encourage you to read Day 11 - A How-To Guide. An important milestone for myself was to find and read the DOD and Navy instructions on conscientious objection. It was only after reading these documents that it really sank in for me that, however unjustified it may be for others to question your sincerity, the military does at least theoretically have a mechanism by which you can try and escape the immorality of war, or at least express your discontent. For starters, I encourage you to download the below-linked pdf instructions for yourself, and then with the facts in mind, decide what course you want to take to align your actions with the objective moral truth that war is always immoral.
